Information from the Mass Incarceration Task Force

Want to get more informed about mass incarceration?

US_incarceration_timeline-clean.svgMore and more people are joining the national movement to dismantle the system of mass incarceration in this country as they learn about what happens behind prison walls in our name and who gets put there.

If you’re just getting tuned into this movement and would like to learn more, a good place to start is by reading two books: Just Mercy: A Story of Justice & Redemption by Bryan Stevenson and The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindedness by Michelle Alexander. Both books eloquently and compellingly portray a justice system that has strayed far from any semblance of rehabilitation, and frequently destroys lives, families, and communities.

You can also hear Bryan Stevenson speaking at Harvard by clicking on the highlighted link: http://www.iop.harvard.edu/content/justice-era-mass-imprisonment

The recently-formed Mass Incarceration Task Force of our presbytery is also available to direct you to other resources or provide speakers and/or resources for adult education. Stay tuned for more news and events in the coming months. You can contact the Task Force chair, Bill Wakefield at 609.306.5299 or Bill.Wakefield0@gmail.com.
